Urbano 116, at 116 King St. in Old Town Alexandria, is opening this Monday, Jan. 21. The Mexican restaurant will feature an extensive menu of traditional Mexican food, including mole, tacos, ceviche, in-house made tortillas and more.
Common Plate Hospitality, the group behind the new Catch on the Ave. in Del Ray, Mason Social and Augie’s Mussel House, developed the restaurant.
Chef Alam Méndez Florián hails from Mexico City and is the son of renowned traditional cook known “La Madre de Mole,” Celia Florián. Common Plate Hospitality execs met Méndez Florián while on a research trip to Mexico. Méndez Florián attended the Culinary Institute of Mexico in Puebla and has worked in several Michelin-starred restaurants. He opened his own restaurant, Pasillo de Humo, in 2016 in Mexico City.
When it opens Monday, Urbano 116 will offer lunch and dinner service. Guests can grab churros street side at the walk-up window on King St. The restaurant plans to offer brunch in the coming weeks.
The interior design features whitewashed, exposed brick, traditional patterned tiles and a modern mural of a Mexican wrestler by local Latino artist David Amoroso. The restaurant seats 160 people, including a private dining room for 45 and a large U-shaped bar that will offer craft cocktails and a large list of agave-based spirits.
