Underground Kitchen recently hosted its first dinner Oct. 20 in Alexandria at a top-secret location (as is tradition with the pop-up supper club). Guests gathered for the gourmet dinner at Union Square, 204 S. Royal St., an event space built in 1880 at the site of the Concordia Hotel.
This won't be the only Underground Kitchen event — another Alexandria event is rumored for later this year.
The “UGK Luxury: Ruffled By Truffles” pop-up dinner event featured the smooth, velvety, rich flavor of truffles in five courses with premium wine pairings, a welcoming cocktail and amuse-bouche. Celebrity Chef J. Ponder recently acquired a private stock of fine truffles that he was excited to share with guests.
A native of Monroe, Georgia, Ponder draws his cooking pedigree from a food-loving community that cherishes family recipes. Later, he honed his cooking prowess as a culinary specialist in the U.S. Navy, where he was frequently hand-selected to prepare meals for military and political dignitaries.
He now owns Norfolk Kitchen Lab, with outposts in Hampton Roads, Va. and Atlanta, Ga. In 2013, chef Ponder appeared on Food Network’s “Chopped,” and in 2015, he won Food Network's “Cutthroat Kitchen.”
