Just in time for summer, Rita's has opened a new Italian ice and custard shop in the Alexandria area.
The new store, at 7592 Telegraph Rd., is serving up cold treats from Italian ice to custard and various combinations of the two along with a variety of toppings.
Rita's was the creation of Bob Tumolo, a former Philadelphia firefighter, who opened a small Italian Ice business on his front porch near Philadelphia. That first shop was named after his wife, Rita.
Today, Rita's is serving up "Ice Custard Happiness" in more than 30 states at about 600 locations.
This is the only Rita's in the Alexandria area. A Rita's near Landmark Mall closed a few years ago.
Save the date: Rita's nationwide offers free Italian ice on the first day of spring every year. In 2024, that's March 19.
Hours are noon - 9 p.m. daily.
