One of Alexandria's restaurants is closing this week to the public, but the kitchen will be as busy as ever.
The kitchen at Delia's, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in Eisenhower East, will be used to prepare 15,000 meals per day for National Guard troops stationed in Washington, DC for Inauguration security.
In a Facebook post, the restaurant announced: "We will be closed today, Saturday January 16th through Thursday, January 21st. Last week, we were honored to be selected to provide meals to the National Guard during inauguration week. Our kitchen will be used to prepare 15,000 meals per day this upcoming week. We will re-open on Friday, January 22nd. We appreciate your continued support!"
The restaurant is accepting volunteers to help feed the troops. Daily shifts start at 9:15 a.m. Monday through Thursday (Jan. 18 - 21).
The restaurant is located at 209 Swamp Fox Road. Shifts end at 3:30 p.m. daily. Volunteers should wear black pants, a black t-shirt or polo shirt and comfortable tennis shoes. For more information, email owner George Theodorou at george@eatdelias.com.
Ted and Soula Theodorou opened Delia's 40 years ago in Springfield. Both of their children, George and Alki, went into the restaurant industry and eventually joined forces to grow the Delia's brand.
The National Guard is stationed in the District, primarily in and around the Capitol, to secure the Presidential Inauguration, which is this Wednesday, Jan. 20.
