The Alexandria Planning Commission will consider a proposal Feb. 5 to use 2,000 square feet of space in front of the Torpedo Factory for an outdoor food and crafts market facing the Potomac River waterfront.
The proposal from Vola's Dockside Grill, located nearby at 101 N. Union St., calls for seating plus space for selling or displaying art. The area would be roped off, per Virginia ABC regulations. A movable trailer would be used for food and beverage service. Vola's Dockside Grill is owned by Alexandria Restaurant Partners.
The Torpedo Factory Art Center, at 105 N. Union St., is a former naval munitions factory that was converted into an art center on the banks of the Potomac River in Old Town Alexandria. Visitors can observe artists in their studios as well as purchase art on display. Founded in 1974, the center is home to the nation’s largest collection of working-artists’ open studios under one roof.
