Mason & Greens, a sustainable dry goods and grocer, will be opening this spring in Old Town Alexandria.
Patrons will need to bring their own bags, jars and containers for bulk goods and to carry groceries home — there will be no plastic bags or packaging there.
The store touts itself as the area's “first bulk and zero waste shop.”
According to its website, “Mason & Greens brings the community of Alexandria and its surrounding areas the ability to shop sans plastic. Sans disposable bags. Sans unnecessary waste. And knowing that your buying power is going to support companies who care about reducing waste we can start to combat the frivolous throw away culture that has crept in all around us.”
The dry goods and grocery store will open at 913 King St. this spring or summer, ALXNow first reported.
The grocer recommends that you bring your own bags not just for carrying groceries home, but also for produce and bulk bin items. You can also bring your own jars. “They can be new jars or jars you are up cycling like used jam or pickle jars. And please, your jars don’t have to all be glass. If you have an old plastic hand soap bottle you want to refill, bring it in! The less plastic we send to the landfill, the better. Don’t have your own jars? We’ve got ya,” the website explains.
Mason & Greens will be cash free, accepting only debit, credit and other electronic payments. Those who bring their own bags or jars will weigh them before filling them, ensuring they only pay for the weight of the food.
The townhome location is a historic High Victorian Row House property, the only surviving one on King Street, according to real estate site Loopnet. It was built in 1888. It is located between Ten Thousand Villages and The Majestic on King Street, just east of Patrick Street/Route 1.
