Taco + Piña, a new "fine casual" Mexican restaurant, will open its doors on Tuesday, May 5, in Shirlington Village.
Doors will open Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.
The new eatery was inspired by Chef Graham Barlett's trips to Mexico during the summer as a child with his parents and later working at Richard Sandoval's Restaurants, as regional executive chef.
The restaurant, which announced its opening on Instagram, at 4041 Campbell Ave., will be open for takeout and delivery only, like many other restaurants during the COVID-19 shutdown. (Lotus Vietnamese Grill & Noodles was formerly in the spot.)
The menu includes nachos, tostadas, tacos, enchiladas and sweets including honey-roasted plantains and pineapple plantain splits. Imported Mexican beers and locally crafted beers are also on the bar menu.
The first review posted on Yelp Sunday during a soft opening says standouts include the fried chicken taco, Baja fish taco and mushroom taco. Frozen margaritas to-go "weren't too sweet and tasted made from scratch as opposed to a mix."
Another reviewer noted that "the signature pina + taco was one of the most unique tacos I've ever had. Who knew orange Fanta-marinated meat could taste so good? The pineapple and pickled onion added a lot to it and it was super tasty."
