Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams opened in Alexandria, Va. this week.
Without any fanfare — or even a social media post — Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams opened its scoop shop in Old Town.
Still, it was crowded Friday evening as customers asked for multiple samples before deciding on a flavor.
The shop is in Misha's former location at 102 N. Patrick St. (aka Route 1/Richmond Highway North). Misha's opened in its new location at 907 King St. earlier this year. There's plenty of seating inside, including a counter and several booths in the brightly lit, white and orange shop.
Current flavors at Jeni's in Old Town include variations on vanilla and chocolate, plus unique flavors like brambleberry crisp, frose, cognac with ginger bread and boozy eggnog. Prices start at $5.75.
Or, you can get a $21 flight of 10 ice cream flavors.
Jeni's first Yelp review for the Old Town location said, in part, "Sadly, Jeni's is so close I can WALK there which may be my downfall. Seriously. Spacious, light, wonderfully decorated. Two samples...bought a pint of the Brambleberry Crisp and of course I had to buy a cone for the short drive home: peanut butter with chocolate flakes - something like that. I was just so excited to be a new patron. I'll be a regular - count on that!"
Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream more than three dozen locations nationwide. It was founded in 2002 in Columbus, Ohio, by Jeni Britton Bauer. The company uses only whole ingredients (no artificial flavors or colors) and uses dairy from grass-fed cows. The company also has a variety of dairy-free options, a pint club, delivery service and ice cream cookbooks.
The company is also working toward zero waste and features compostable bowls, spoons and napkins. Compost bins are available in the Old Town shop.
