A company called Carpe DC Food Tours will launch in Alexandria beginning in March, highlighting the food, history and culture of the City, Visit Alexandria announced this week.
The tours feature a guide leading a group of about eight people on walking tours of neighborhoods, where participants sample dishes at a variety of restaurants and hear about the local culture and history. Some tours can be self-guided.
The food tour company, Carpe DC Food Tours, was co-founded in 2014 by Mary Collins and her husband Stefan Woehlke; they also offer culinary walking tours of D.C.'s U Street area and Georgetown.
The company is currently selling tickets to its Alexandria tours:
- Boutique Old Town Food Tour: $89 gets you tastings at five locations plus one alcohol tasting. The tours are held Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and begin on March 22.
- Alexandria Tastes of Spring Cherry Blossom Food Crawl: $80 gets you six tastings or $96 gets you eight tastings from 10 participating restaurants April 7 on this self-guided tour during cherry blossom season.
Other key things to know: Tours have vegetarian options; a portion of every sale helps feed someone in need through a partnership with a local nonprofit; once you purchase your ticket, you'll be given the address of the first stop on the tour.
The company has 386 reviews on TripAdvisor, where 86 percent of customers give it an "excellent" rating; reviewers say they like the food variety, "interesting history" and knowledgable guides.
