Del Ray Boccato is closing in June, the company announced.
Del Ray Boccato, at 2400 Mt. Vernon Ave., was known for its gelato and empanadas. The cafe opened in 2020, but told its customers this week in an Instagram post and a message on its door that it will close June 15.
There is some debate among linguists about whether the word boccato was originally Spanish or Italian, but most are in agreement that it loosely translates to "delicious."
The message noted that many people in Del Ray didn't get the chance to try them — or didn't know they were there. The company wants to reopen, but would do so in Falls Church or possibly Clarendon.
