Saba Live Poultry, a Halal poultry processor and live butchery, has received approval from the City Council to open its retail establishment in Alexandria.
DC Poultry Market Corp. will open a new slaughter-to-order butcher retail enterprise at 3225 Colvin Street
Saba Live Poultry has 14 locations across the country. Locations include multiple in New York, plus Connecticut, Pennsylvania, California and Florida.
According to the company’s application sent to the City, customers will be able to choose the live chicken they would like to have prepared. The chicken would be weighed by a hanging scale before being moved to a slaughter room, where it would receive prayers in accordance with Halal standards. The chicken will then be killed, plucked, cleaned and given to the customer, all in accordance with Halal guidelines.

Several Alexandria residents brought up concerns about animal cruelty and concerns about potential smells, waste and biohazards. The City Council recognized those concerns but the facility owners reassured officials these matters will be handled in accordance with all local rules and regulations for food facilties.
No word on an opening date for the Alexandria establishment yet.
