Charlie’s on the Avenue opened for business Thursday with a celebratory happy hour.
The main menu includes a variety of salads and sandwiches; the bar menu features chili, pretzels, shrimp, ribs and more. (See the full menu at www.charliesontheave.com.)
Charlie’s on the Avenue is the newest venture from the team behind Live Oak, also in Del Ray. Charie’s took over the former FireFlies restaurant, which closed in December, at 1501 Mount Vernon Ave.
The restaurant seats 86 with 16 seats outside. It is open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily.
Online ordering is coming soon.
Next door at 1503-1505 Mount Vernon Ave., Charlie’s on the Avenue is working toward opening a beer garden with 64 outdoor seats.
In a revision to the restaurant's previous land use proposal, Charlie’s on the Avenue is asking to open the beer garden at the former Greenstreet Gardens.
The beer garden will include additional bathrooms inside the building on site, fences and landscaping. It will not allow previously proposed outdoor grilling aside from special permitted events. The beer garden will close earlier than the restaurant itself, in response to concerns from neighbors about noise.
The beer garden may be on the docket for the Alexandria City Council meeting on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall.
