Five Guys will be opening a new restaurant at Potomac Yard this fall — right next to the new Cava Grill in the space previously occupied by Don Pablo's Tex-Mex restaurant.
The Lorton-based company, which got its start in Northern Virginia in 1986, offers up a menu of burgers, fries, hot dogs and shakes and a few other items.
Five Guys opened a large restaurant on King Street in 2016, shuttering a smaller restaurant on Fayette Street in Old Town. Other area locations include Reagan National Airport, Quander Road near Belle Haven, Richmond Highway south of Groveton, Bailey's Crossroads, Annandale and Springfield.
Five Guys has been a DC-area favorite since the '80s, when Jerry and Janie Murrell told their four young sons: "Start a business or go to college." The business route beckoned, and the Murrell family opened a burger joint in Arlington.
During the 1980s and 1990s the Murrell family perfected their burger-making. Five Guys was the go-to spot to get a fresh, juicy burger with all the toppings you could stuff between fresh-baked buns. A fifth brother was born and, as their family grew, so did their business. Four more restaurants with sit-down seating were added to accommodate the burger eatery's fans.
In 2003 Jerry and Janie, together with the five "guys," began offering franchise opportunities. In under 18 months, Five Guys Enterprises sold options for over 300 units. The company's franchising made national news with articles in trade publications such as Nation's Restaurant News, Restaurant Business Magazine, and the Franchise Times.
