While many are familiar with food and wine pairings, Whiskey is also an option that can make a meal. On Wednesday, February 27 beginning at 6:30 pm, it’s ‘Whiskey Wednesday’ at Union Street Public House located at 121 S. Union Street in Old Town Alexandria. This particular Whiskey Wednesday, the restaurant presents a 4-course $60 prix fixe meal with Whiskey cocktail pairings in the restaurant’s acclaimed Whiskey Bar. Reservations for this event are required. Each and every Wednesday, the Whiskey Bar features unique spirits or a special event based on the storied libation.
Chef Jeremy Waybright’s menu evokes a little of the venue’s Southern flavors with a regional twist. The dinner begins with a welcome cocktail and hor d’oeuvres of pork rinds and Pimento cheese paired with a classic Manhattan. Scallop Carpaccio- with orange pickled carrot, tarragon oil and Tasso ham gremolata follows, matched with a Duval Spritz. Pork & grits-AOF pork belly, with champagne rock shrimp, charred radicchio and apricot cider gravy comes to the table with a Master Old Fashioned; smoked duck, with honey coriander glazed carrot, pistachio & seeds, and maple vinegar with a Forklage Sour. For dessert, chocolate torte-caramelized banana, candied peanuts, butterscotch and sea salt with ‘Smoke on the Potomac.’
Union Street’s Whiskey Bar is a unique hideaway, located in the depths of the restaurant down a back hallway. Its historic, old world speakeasy style features exposed brick walls, a copper bar and over 240 Whiskeys, making it the perfect backdrop for sipping and sampling, leisurely dinners and private conversations.
Union Street Public House is a blend of the historic and contemporary. The Taproom and Grill Room, renovated in 1985, make up the main part of the restaurant. The Regatta Room and Whiskey Bar fill a more intimate section, housed in a building that dates to the late 1700’s and was reportedly used as a meeting space by colonial merchants, including George Washington.
The restaurant is open Monday – Thursday---Lunch from 11 am until 3:00 pm; Dinner 5-10 pm; Friday; Sunday Lunch/Brunch from 11 am until 3:00 pm; Dinner 5 pm to 10 pm; Late Night Menu available daily. Happy Hour in the Taproom Monday- Friday from 3-7 pm. The Whiskey Bar opens at 5:00 Wednesday through Saturday. Private parties and special events in all rooms by appointment.
