During Mount Vernon Genealogical Society’s February meeting, Historian Megan Kate Nelson will explain how the desert Southwest—New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California—became a site of conflict between U.S. soldiers, Confederate Texans, and Indigenous peoples during the Civil War.
Drawing on material from her book, The Three-Cornered War, Pulitzer Prize in History finalist, Nelson will describe four phases in this often-overlooked war theater.
Nelson has authored four books and writes about the Civil War, the U.S. West, and American culture for The New York Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic, and Smithsonian Magazine.
