Alexandria Sister Cities Committee’s Annual Whisky Tasting Raises Funds for Educational and Cultural Exchanges
It’s no secret that we Alexandrians love to celebrate our Scottish roots, donning kilts, boasting a strong rugby league, and leaning hard into Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend. Springtime provides yet another excuse to pull out the kilts and tartans - and party Scottish style, for a great cause supporting education and cultural exchanges between Alexandria; Dundee, Scotland; and Helsingborg, Sweden.
On April 5, the Alexandria Sister Cities Committee (ASCC) will welcome guests for the 7th Annual Scottish Whisky and Wine Fundraiser event from 7-10 p.m. at Gadsby’s Tavern. The past 3 years have been sold out -at capacity- at Lloyd House. “Moving the event to Gadsby’s will allow us to expand the event and add a private VIP tasting of very high-end curated single malts to hard core whisky enthusiasts,” says Committee member and Whisky Tasting Chair Dana Linnet. Indeed, we have learned that the VIP tasting will be led by a global whisky ambassador. "This event is going to be very special, thanks to our generous sponsor, Beam Suntory, e.g. Laphroiag, Bowmore, Achentoshan among other exclusive single malt brands. For those who know whisky, this event will be at a new level."
The event ticket includes a catered BBQ dinner by Sweet Fire Donna’s, wine, and bagpipe and fiddle entertainment by well-known musician Peter Walker. Allison Preibe of Queen Bee Designs has donated a spectacular array of raffle prizes that includes a $1000 gift certificate, among other special pieces. "We are so fortunate to have the support of our local businesses,” Linnet says. St Andrews Society and the Scottish American Women’s Association are also supporting Sister Cities in this event effort.
Alexandria’s Sister Cities Committee members work hard year-round as volunteers, promoting people-to-people ties and hosting musicians, students, artists and dignitaries ensuring that they meet every day Alexandrians, whether students at NOVA or TC Williams High School, or other local artists and educators." In today’s modern world, people connect online more than ever before, but it can be shallow. People truly learn from each other and form genuine friendships and experiences from personal interaction,” according to ASCC Chair, Maureen Dugan, “Our committee works to deepen Alexandria’s ties with both Dundee, Scotland as well as Helsingborg, Sweden,” Dugan says. “Our fundraiser will allow us to facilitate more exchanges over the coming year. We deeply appreciate everyone’s support.”
So if you’re looking for a great excuse to drink whisky and celebrate the bonds between Alexandria and Scotland, this is the party for you. Tickets can be found on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/annual-scottish-whisky-tasting-wine-tickets-57858095120 Slainte!
