Alexandria Community Remembrance Project Soil Collection Ceremony
Market Square 300 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22305
The Alexandria Community Remembrance Project (ACRP) invites the public to join us in a somber soil collection ceremony to recognize the lives and lynchings of Joseph McCoy and Benjamin Thomas. The Soil Collection ceremony honors the lives and deaths of McCoy and Thomas and features placing soil into jars that will be given to the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). Community members will be welcome to take part in the soil ceremony, drawing soil from two wooden vessels designed and built by 8th grade students at Jefferson-Houston IB School. The soil jars will be taken by the community to Montgomery, Alabama and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice as part of the ACRP pilgrimage Oct. 6-10, 2022.
