The City of Alexandria will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a community program on Wednesday, January 15, at 7:30 p.m., at Beth El Hebrew Congregation (3850 Seminary Road).
The program, "Dr. King's 2020 Vision: The Beloved Community — The Fierce Urgency of Now," will be presented by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Planning Committee and will include welcome remarks by Mayor Justin Wilson; a keynote address by Dr. Spencer Crew, interim director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture; and music by the Male Chorus of Alexandria's Russell Temple CME Church. This event is free and open to the public.
This gathering is also sponsored by Alexandria's Community Remembrance Project, which highlights work with the Equal Justice Imitative to examine and interpret the City's lynching history. Members of the committee will be available to provide updates on Alexandria's process of claiming its lynching pillar.
