Alexandria is home to thousands of government employees, many of whom learned Friday night that they may not be going to work Monday morning due to the shutdown of the Federal government.
This is the first Federal government shutdown since 2013.
With so many Federal employees in the region, a number of restaurants and other businesses are offering "shutdown specials." Here are a few. If you hear of others, send an email to info@alexandrialivingmagazine.com.
CAVA in Alexandria at the Shoppes of Foxchase at Kingstowne Town Center is offering a 10 percent discount on single purchases of bowls and pitas to all furloughed federal government employees. This only applies to CAVA locations (not CAVA Mezze). Dine-in only.
Fibre Space posted on Instagram: "We will be offering free learn to knit classes for furloughed government employees and federal contractors. Monday through Wednesday of this week, you may choose 12 - 2 p.m. class or 2 - 4 p.m. class. Simply show up! Materials needed and available for purchase: US#8 bamboo or wood needles and 200 yards of worsted weight yarn."
Pork Barrell BBQ in Del Ray, 2312 Mount Vernon Avenue, posted on Facebook: "Staring Monday, and every workday going forward Pork Barrel will offer one FREE PULLED PORK SANDWICH to any Federal Employee as long as the Government Shutdown continues. EVERY Monday - Friday for the Duration of this Mess. This time we are also extending an additional offer: Any member of congress that comes with a colleague from across the aisle to talk out solutions will be fed for free. Come in and talk we'll talk care of your meal. Good BBQ can fix anything."
Sugar Shack, all locations, is offering a free locally roasted coffee (any size) with any purchase for as long as the shutdown continues. Show your government ID.
Sweet Fire Donna's, 510 Carlyle Street, tweeted out: "Starting on Monday If you are a government employee out of work we will give you a free pork sandwich (Please show your cashier your Govt. ID)."
