There are signs that renovations have started on the future home of Patagonia, the outdoor clothing and gear company taking up residence at Alexandria's Old Town Theater building.
It will be the first Patagonia store in Virginia.
The renovations of the building, according to City records, include leveling the floor slab at the ground level, modifying the floor plate for the building's upper mezzanine, modifying the existing stairs at the rear exit doors and second floor, and the installation of new restrooms, as well as a new elevator shaft. The renovations will cost more than $300,000.
The historic building is owned by Asana Partners, a real estate investment firm.
Patagonia expects to open sometime in 2020, depending on the construction scheduled. There's already been a slight delay: Last week, the City of Alexandria issued a temporary "stop work" order to contractor August Construction Solutions Inc. of Raleigh, N.C. and Old Town 2 LLC. The stop work order was issued Aug. 28 due to, according to a letter posted on the building, performing work "without appropriate permits and/or inspections." They were doing structural demolition that was not indicated on the permit drawings, and the permit had expired.
