A Lidl grocery store is opening at Pinecrest Plaza at 6548 Little River Turnpike, according to Edens, a real estate owner, operator and developer. The store is more than 23,000 square feet in size.
This will mark the first Lidl (rhymes with "needle") store near Alexandria. Lidl acquired several Shoppers stores in the region including in Burke. The company expects to have 100 stores along the East Coast by the end of 2020.
Lidl's U.S. corporate headquarters is located in Virginia, at 3500 S. Clark St. in Arlington, where it also operates Lidl Express, a 1,000-square foot convenience store.
The global discount supermarket chain counts more than 11,000 stores in 29 countries. Lidl got its start in 1973, when it opened its first store in Germany in a town called Ludwigshafen (25 miles south of Frankfurt).
The store reportedly offers discounted prices because many of its offerings are from its own private label.
No opening date has yet been announced. Lidl store grand openings usually include gift card giveaways, free samples, free reusable grocery bags, special deals and giveaways throughout the opening weekend.
Lidl announced last year that it was adding health insurance for part-time employees.
