Ready to do some fall crafting? Decorate for Halloween?
A Michaels craft store will open its doors at Potomac Yard shopping center Thursday, Sept. 20, in Alexandria, manager Lucy Perdomo said Wednesday night.
The "soft opening" next Thursday evening from 6 - 9 p.m. comes ahead of a planned grand opening Sunday, Sept. 23. The new store is located at 3691 Jefferson Davis Hwy. in the Potomac Yard area in Alexandria.
Thursday evening's "friends and family" event is open to the public, according to Perdomo. Be on the lookout for free classes available from Thursday through the grand opening Sunday, Sept. 23.
Doors will open for regular hours starting Friday, Sept. 21 at 9 a.m.; daily hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.
As part of the grand opening celebration on Sept. 23, Michaels will be giving away gift cards and prizes throughout the day. There will also be special offers across the store.
The new Michaels store will offer a variety of classes in everything from cake decorating to paper crafting. On weekends, kids can explore their creativity with "Kids Club" crafting events that continue all year long.
The store got its start in 1962 when Michael J. Dupey, a Dallas businessman, debuted Dupey Enterprises, Inc. - the company that would open the very first Michaels store. The first Michaels opened in 1973 in Dallas. Michaels reached 1,000 stores in 2008, $4 billion in annual sales in 2010 and became a publicly traded company in 2014.
The company recently announced plans to hire 15,000 seasonal employees for the holidays.
