La Mart International food store will open in the shopping center at Edsall Road and South Van Dorn Street. The area is slated for eventual redevelopment.
The building that housed the Giant supermarket at the intersection of South Van Dorn Street and Edsall Road wasn’t empty for long.
La Mart International is taking over the space. The international foods store is based in Maryland and was founded in 2004 in Silver Spring, Maryland.
La Mart has a location in Springfield at 6711 Bland St. That store opened in 2011.
Shoppers note in online reviews that fruit and vegetables and fresh and inexpensive, and the stores have a wide variety of international and hard-to-find snacks.
Giant vacated the store at 5730 Edsall Road in the Van Dorn Station shopping center in November and opened a new store the next day at 6200 Little River Turnpike at the Plaza at Landmark shopping center.
The entire neighborhood is slated for eventual redevelopment. Last month, the Alexandria City Council approved the Pickett Place redevelopment project, which includes residential, retail, office and more in and around the shopping center.
