Cyber Monday got its start after the National Retail Federation noticed a spike in online shopping the Monday after Thanksgiving for several years in a row. It started back when it was less common to have high-speed Internet at home, and people would use their faster connections at work to shop online.
Answer: The first official "Cyber Monday" was in 2005.
In 2019, shoppers spent more than $9 billion online on Cyber Monday, according to the National Retail Federation. This year could be even bigger: Although the pandemic has hurt the economy, fewer people are shopping in person this year, overall.
