Gasoline could suddenly drop by 26.5-cents per gallon in Virginia (and diesel would drop 27-cents) if Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s proposal moves forward.
In mid-March, Youngkin a gas tax holiday for the Commonwealth. Now, he’s pushing the legislature, which goes into session Monday, to pass that gas tax holiday for May, June and July — some of the region’s biggest travel months — to reduce financial pressure on consumers. Youngkin says the proposal could cost the state $400 million in revenue.
Maryland’s gas tax holiday started in mid-March and will expire April 16 unless that state’s leaders take action to extend it. The gas tax there is 36-cents per gallon of gasoline.
Here in Alexandria, a few places have gas for less than $4 per gallon for the first time in a while — the Liberty gas station at 725 N. Washington St. is at $3.92 per gallon, the Exxon across the street at 703 N. Washington St. has gas for $3.95 per gallon.
