Goldfish Swim School to open in Alexandria.
Year-round swimming lessons will be available at new swim center opening soon in Alexandria.
Get ready to dive into something new: Goldfish Swim School will be opening in the Alexandria Commons shopping center on Duke Street, with the owners aiming for a December opening.
Construction at the site, at 3155 Duke St., next door to Guitar Center, is already underway. A building permit was issued July 19 and a crew was busy remodeling the interior Monday morning.
The crew noted that the pool will be about 25-feet by 80-feet and it will be heated. The permit notes renovation costs of more than $377,000.
Goldfish Swim School has locations in Northern Virginia in Reston, Falls Church and Ashburn, plus Maryland locations in Silver Spring and Columbia.
In addition to kids' swim lessons aimed at children from 4 months old to 12 years old, the pools are also popular as party spots and times for family swimming.
The school features a "no shivers" 90-degree pool, four-to-one student/teacher ratio and a "pro shop" called Treasure Island featuring swim gear, toys and more. Classes are paid for on a monthly basis (around $100 per month at other locations), or on a drop-in basis.
The swim schools also usually feature a snack shack where students and parents can grab a bite to eat (granola bars, popcorn, beverages) after swim lessons, plus hair drying stations, swimsuit drying stations and private changing rooms.
