Coworking company ALX Community, food market Mae’s Market & Café and Virginia’s Darling Restaurant are coming to The Atrium Building on South Washington St. in Alexandria.
The building was previously home to Society Fair, a gourmet food emporium that closed in July 2019.
Bethesda-based W.C. & A.N. Miller Development Co. and global real estate advisor, Avison Young, announced the new venture Wednesday. The Atrium Building is a five-story office building located in Old Town at 277 S. Washington St.
Locally owned ALX Community has experienced growth despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The coworking firm has committed to 15,000 square feet of the 146,540 square foot building with an opening set for fall 2021. They will offer private offices as well as shared amenities, meeting rooms and collaboration areas.
Mae’s Market & Café and Virginia’s Darling Restaurant are the newest ventures of Del Ray-favorite Stomping Ground. The market, which will open in February, will feature coffee, baked goods, salads and sandwiches. The restaurant will open at the end of 2021.
“The timing of the location’s opening — as well as The Atrium Building itself — should be ideal for the ALX Community,” said Scott Shaw, ALX Community co-founder. “Fall 2021 puts us on the other side of the pandemic, which is a plus...and we think The Atrium Building’s size, amenities and location are a winning combination for companies that have been waiting to make a move.”
“Companies everywhere are rethinking their real estate strategy as a result of the pandemic," he noted. "Flexibility is the key driver, but large, modern meeting space is also a must-have as they plan for a post-COVID world where they expect to bring remote workers in on a regular basis.”

W.C. & A.N. Miller Development Company is excited to welcome the businesses to their building. “These businesses are highly regarded and loved by the local community, and we are proud to provide a home for their next business endeavors,” said Robert Miller, Chief Executive Officer.
The development company has big plans for The Atrium Building, which will undergo a $5 million renovation. Amenities planned for the building include lounge areas, a golf-simulator, showers, lockers and a secured bike room. The 4,500-square foot penthouse will become a modern conference center with seating for up to 120.
