Though Capitol Post, Alexandria’s veteran-focused business incubator, has closed, its mission is continuing.
Capitol Post last week passed the torch to the Alexandria Small Business Development Center (SBDC), which is starting 2020 with a strengthened focus on veterans who are transitioning out of the military.
Capitol Post was founded in 2013 by Emily McMahan, a veteran herself. The purpose was to help veterans and their spouses build and develop business ideas. In many ways, Capitol Post accomplished its goal, launching quite a few successful businesses that are still going today, including Alexandria-based True Made Foods.
At last week’s event, McMahan noted that the business community is so supportive in Alexandria, that Capitol Post wouldn’t have succeeded anywhere else. She was honored to work with so many veterans and spouses who were working on building their post-military legacy.
Through the years, the Alexandria SBDC has worked with hundreds of veterans, but the SBDC now plans to increase its focus on veteran programs. This will include leveraging the experience of local veterans to provide more service to veterans who are transitioning out of the military.
In many ways, veterans are ideal entrepreneurs — they’re dedicated, caring and mission-focused, said SBDC Executive Director Bill Reagan.
“We’re excited to assume this role,” he said.
