The nonprofit arts organization Local Motion Project is going through a significant transition this spring that will poise the Local Motion Project to expand into a comprehensive, mission-drive movement arts center.
Local Motion Studio, LLC, the for-profit studio which has been subleasing space to the Local Motion Project nonprofit arts organization, is closing May 31.
To move forward, the Local Motion Project must take over the lease and will also take on the programming offered at Local Motion Studio — including popular classes like contemporary Pilates and aerial.
The change essentially brings the offerings Local Motion Studio under the Local Motion Project nonprofit umbrella and will enable to project to expand and serve more people in the community.
The new Local Motion Project Movement Arts Center will be focused on the mission of “Bringing meaning experiences to people's lives through dance and other movement arts.”
Programming will include mission-driven adult dance and fitness classes; free community classes and a youth dance school that emphasizes creativity and collaboration (and offers need-based scholarships).
Local Motion Project will continue to offer dance integration residences in Alexandria elementary schools, partner with local arts organizations and develop classes for specialized populations (such as senior citizens and children with special needs).
In support of the new mission, the Local Motion Project nonprofit is hosting a dance-a-thon and Spring2ACTion kick off event on Saturday, April 7.
The event, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., will include a glow party, food and drinks, music, a photo booth and more. Your Spring2ACTion Local Motion Project donation receipt is your ticket into the event. To donate, go to bit.ly/LocalMotionSpring2Action.
