A few lucky stormwater covers in Old Town North will soon get a makeover.
As part of an effort to enhance Old Town North’s role as the official Art and Cultural District , the City of Alexandria’s Public Art Program is seeking up to three artists who will create up to two original designs for stormwater covers and the surrounding concrete apron.
Each design will be used for approximately four stormwater covers throughout Old Town North. Most of the stormwater drains will be located on Fairfax Street which has been designated an Arts Corridor.
Applicants must be 18 years and older and live in Virginia, Maryland or D.C. Additional eligibility information, selection criteria and other requirements can be found here. The application deadline is April 30 at 6 p.m.
Once selected, artists will be given $2,000 to create the designs. Artists will be required to visit the area and their designs must be inspired by or representative of the Old Town North neighborhood.
Public meetings with the artist will be held in June before concepts are due. Design concepts will be approved in July. Art will be fabricated and installed by a foundry company. Installation and unveiling of the art will be announced at a later date.
