It’s crazy to think about, but summer will be over before we know it. Fortunately, we have a Labor Day Weekend guide and giveaway to get you looking forward to soaking up the last days of summer! Here's what's on the calendar around town:
Friday, Sept. 4
Working the Vines: Labor in Wine Production - Planet Wine, 6-7 p.m. A seated wine class with Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s wine director, Erin Dudley, tasting six wines from labor-conscious wineries alongside a discussion of the labor force behind them - a timely, Labor Day-minded way to kick off the weekend. Tickets include the tasting, a cheese pairing, and discounts on bottle purchases.
Mount Vernon Member Open House weekend - George Washington's Mount Vernon runs a members-only open house September 3-6, a quieter way to see the estate before the holiday crowds. If you're not a member, it's still a good weekend for a regular visit before the season turns.
Saturday, Sept. 5
Free Family Fun Day at Carlyle House: Fun with Science - 12-3 p.m. First Saturdays bring story time, crafts, and hands-on activities for kids at one of Old Town's landmark historic homes; September's theme is Fun with Science.
Health and Wellness 5K - Holmes Run Trail. A great excuse to get moving before the long weekend of eating and celebrating begins.
Hook in Concert with the National Symphony Orchestra - Filene Center at Wolf Trap, 7:30 p.m. The National Symphony Orchestra performs John Williams' Grammy-nominated score live while the full film plays on screen, marking Hook's 35th anniversary. Do you feel old now? Because I do. We're giving away five lawn tickets! Details below.
Sunday, Sept. 6
Alexandria Cars & Coffee at Hollin Hall - Hollin Hall Shopping Center, 8-10 a.m. This informal car meet - open to anything from classics to daily drivers - runs the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, weather permitting, and Sept 6 is one of them. Grab a pastry at Hollin Hall Pastry Shop while you look around.
Mount Vernon Park 5K & 10K - Mount Vernon District Park, 7:45-10:30 a.m. A trail race through the park along the Potomac (5K is two loops, 10K is four), with walkers welcome too.
Monday, Sept. 7: Labor Day
Labor Day Yoga at Lost Boy Cider - 10-11 a.m. A one-hour vinyasa class at Alexandria's Lost Boy Cider, with a cider (or non-alcoholic option) included for after. A nice way to ease into the holiday before the rest of the day opens up.
Joggers & Lagers - Port City Brewing Company, 6:30-7:30 p.m. This weekly Monday fun run meets at the tasting room for a 1, 3, or 5 mile out-and-back along Holmes Run, with a beer waiting at the finish.
Giveaway: 5 Lawn Tickets to Hook in Concert!
To celebrate the unofficial end of summer, we're giving away five lawn tickets to Hook in Concert with the National Symphony Orchestra, Saturday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap.
