If you are a fan of TED talks, you won't want to miss Alexandria's very own TEDx Oronoco Bay Park event set for Saturday, Oct. 5, an independently organized TED event. Tickets go on sale Friday, Sept. 6. Each ticket costs $50 and gets you access to the full main stage event and reception, at the Mary Gates Learning Center, United Way Worldwide, 701 N. Fairfax St., Alexandria.
The event will feature a number of speakers on a wide variety of original topics. Speakers are slated to begin their presentations at 2 p.m., with the a reception capping off the event, at 5 p.m.
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission: “ideas worth spreading.” The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
Alexandria Living Magazine is publishing short profiles of the speakers leading up to the event:
- Name: Michael Kramp
- Topic: "Contemporary Masculinity: An Imaginary Crisis and a Failure of Imagination"
- My topic is important to me because: On a personal level, I am raising two boys; on a professional level, I am an academic scholar who writes about representations of masculinity.
- Where I live: Lehigh Valley, Pa.
- My occupation: College professor.
- The hardest thing I've ever done is: Raise two teenagers.
- My motto is: Credit and blame are overrated.
- You'd be surprised that I: Am almost the only one in my extended family who does not live in the state of Washington.
- I want to be remembered for: Thinking in creative ways.
