It's oyster season at the Tides Inn in Irvington, Va.
Fall is the best time to enjoy those Middle Peninsula, Virginia delicacies — oysters — as they’re plump and ready to be harvested.
Time your visit to the Tides Inn to align with two wonderful events: the adults-only Chesapeake Academy’s Community Oyster Roast (Oct. 25) or the Urbanna Oyster Festival (Nov. 7 and 8), which is now in its 68th year. Pro tip: Avoid the crowds and climb aboard the Tides water taxi for an exclusive shuttle experience to Urbanna.
Urbanna is about a two-hour and 20 minute drive from Alexandria.
While you’re visiting, there will be plenty of ways to savor oysters at the Tides, too. Visit their oyster farm, located along the Shoreline Trail, or join their signature Chesapeake Gold experience to get hands-on with harvesting and shucking our favorite mollusks.
For a casual waterfront lunch, head over to Fish Hawk for a raw oyster platter with house-made mignonettes accompanied by a generous serving of french fries tossed with Old Bay seasoning.
