National Night Out is Tuesday, Aug. 6 — and it's a fun opportunity to meet your local police and firefighters. In 45 different locations in the City of Alexandria (and at certain recreation centers in Fairfax County) residents are invited to enjoy a free cookout, ice cream, outdoor activities for kids and more.
Celebrated most places on the first Tuesday in August, NNO "enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances," according to the NNO non-profit organization.
The annual tradition started in 1984 in 400 communities in 23 states, and has grown significantly. Last year, more than 17,000 communities in all 50 states participated.
"During the event, residents throughout Alexandria are asked to come outside and enjoy the evening with their neighbors, police, firefighters, and other City officials. Events held will vary by neighborhood and include cookouts, block parties, and more," according to City of Alexandria officials. "The Alexandria Police Department's K-9 Unit, Motorcycle Unit, Bike Patrol, Command Staff and patrol officers will tour neighborhoods and offer special demonstrations with members of Alexandria Sheriff’s Office and Alexandria Fire Department and other public safety agencies."
