All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed on the third Monday in January to honor the life and legacy of the civil rights leader, celebrating his birthday (Jan. 15, 1929) and promoting his vision of racial equality, often designated as a "day on, not a day off" for community service and volunteering to build his "Beloved Community". Established by President Reagan in 1983, it's the only federal holiday honoring an African American, marked by parades, speeches, and service projects nationwide.
