Little Theatre of Alexandria
The Little Theatre of Alexandria opened the main-stage portion of its 2026/2027 season this weekend with the high-flying musical Catch Me If You Can, running now through August 8 at the company's Wolfe Street playhouse.
Directed by Jarod Glou, the production brings to the LTA stage the Tony-nominated musical inspired by the larger-than-life exploits of Frank Abagnale Jr. — the young con artist who talked, forged and charmed his way into millions by passing himself off as an airline pilot, a doctor and a lawyer, all before he was old enough to legally rent a car. Hot on his heels is dogged FBI agent Carl Hanratty, and the cat-and-mouse chase between the two gives the show its pulse.
Theatergoers may know the story from Steven Spielberg's 2002 film, but the stage version leans hard into showmanship. It comes from the songwriting team behind Hairspray — Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman — with a book by the late Terrence McNally, and frames Frank's escapades as a splashy 1960s TV variety special, all brassy big-band numbers, sharp suits and Rat Pack swagger. The result is a fast, funny, tuneful evening that also finds real heart in the story of a lonely kid chasing a place to belong.
The show is a strong showcase for LTA, which was founded in 1934 and remains one of the oldest community theaters in the Washington region — and one of the few nationwide to own its building and mount a full seven-show season.
