As Americans commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary, George Washington’s Mount Vernon invites visitors looking for an alternative to downtown celebrations to experience Independence Day where America's story began. On July 4, the estate will be alive with made-for-daytime fireworks over the Potomac River, a moving naturalization ceremony welcoming America's newest citizens, Revolutionary War military drills and encampments, readings of the Declaration of Independence, hot air balloon demonstrations, patriotic music, living history interpreters portraying people from George Washington's world, family activities, and immersive 18th-century experiences that bring the founding era to life.
Tickets are available for daytime visits; evening firework shows are sold out, but you can catch all the action on July 3 on PBS and C-SPAN. On July 4, CNN will be on site airing live segments from Mount Vernon.
Whether attending An American Celebration on July 4 or visiting throughout the holiday weekend and the month of July, guests can explore the recently opened George Washington: A Revolutionary Life exhibition, the centerpiece of Mount Vernon's new $20 million Education Center, tour the restored Mansion, stroll the historic estate overlooking the Potomac River, visit George Washington's working distillery and gristmill, and experience the home of the commander of the American Revolution and the nation's first president. America 250 celebrations continue throughout the summer, making Mount Vernon an ideal destination long after the Fourth of July.

Visitors attending An American Celebration will enjoy a full day of patriotic programming, including:

The celebration offers one of the nation's most authentic ways to commemorate Independence Day during America's Semiquincentennial.
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Mount Vernon encourages guests to plan ahead for a memorable Independence Day and holiday weekend experience.
- Ride the Shuttle. Mount Vernon's popular shuttle from the King Street Metro Station has been extended through July, offering a scenic 20-minute ride directly to the estate and making it easier than ever to visit.
- Arrive Early. Visitors should allow extra time for arrival, parking, and entry. Parking is free, and overflow parking will be available as needed.
- Prepare for Summer Weather. Guests are encouraged to dress for the heat, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and take advantage of Mount Vernon's air-conditioned museums, Education Center, and indoor theaters throughout the day. Water refill stations and a misting station will also be available across the estate.
TAKE HOME A PIECE OF AMERICA'S 250
Visitors can commemorate America's milestone anniversary at The Shops at Mount Vernon, featuring exclusive America 250 merchandise, including commemorative ornaments, apparel, collectible coins, patriotic gifts, books, glassware, and other unique keepsakes. Guests also can pick up a free Virginia 250 Passport, receive their official Mount Vernon stamp, and begin exploring more than 70 participating historic sites across the Commonwealth.
Collectors and whiskey enthusiasts can also purchase the newly released George Washington's Spirit of '76 Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey, the first bourbon ever produced by George Washington's Distillery. Limited to approximately 300 bottles and available only at The Shops at Mount Vernon beginning July 4 while supplies last, the commemorative release honors America's 250th anniversary and Washington's legacy as the nation's largest whiskey producer. Visitors also can browse Mount Vernon's award-winning whiskeys and the new Washington's Generals Series commemorative labels celebrating key moments from the Revolutionary War.
