It's still summertime, but tickets are on sale now for railway trips through the fall foliage in Virginia. A trip through the scenic Shenandoah Valley on the Virginia Scenic Railway is an unforgettable way to experience the magic of fall. This unique train experience blends history, comfort, and breathtaking views of western Virginia’s stunning autumn landscape.
The Virginia Scenic Railway departs from Staunton, which is located at the intersection of Interstates 64 and 81, and is just under a three-hour drive from Alexandria. All rides are approximately three hours long and operate Thursday through Sunday. The railcars are climate-controlled and feature expansive windows, ensuring a comfortable and relaxing experience no matter which route you choose.
A Ride Through Time and the Valley
Departing from Staunton's historic Amtrak station, the Virginia Scenic Railway offers the only regularly scheduled tourist train in the state. As you board, you'll step into a beautifully restored 1940s railcar that still maintains its vintage charm despite being fully modernized for comfort. The journey is more than just a ride; it's a narrated experience that delves into the history and geography of the region. As you glide past rolling farmland, forested hills, and slow-moving rivers, you'll hear fascinating stories about local towns and the enduring legacy of rail travel in the Shenandoah Valley.
Choose Your Journey
The Virginia Scenic Railway offers two distinct excursion options:
The Alleghany Special: This three-hour journey travels west from Staunton, venturing into the vast George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. As the train winds through wide-open pastures and wooded hills, you'll be treated to the golden glow of fall foliage. This route runs Thursday through Sunday.
The Blue Ridge Flyer: Heading east from Staunton, this route takes you through Fishersville and Waynesboro, climbing over 1,000 feet to the historic Blue Ridge Tunnel. This is the perfect option for those who want panoramic views and a true sense of ascending into the mountains.
