In a city where an estimated 1 in 4 residents are canines, Alexandria City Council next week will consider an amendment to an old law regarding how many dogs and cats a household can have.
The current limit is three dogs; the new law would raise the limit to five. (Council has had some discussion about setting the limit at four, with more discussion expected at Tuesday evening's meeting.) The limit on felines is four and will not change.
The law was put in place in the 1990s, primarily to protect the health of pets. The law also limits households to four cats and is meant to prevent animal hoarding and ensure animals have adequate space to live.
City Council will take up the matter Tuesday evening, with a final vote on the matter expected later this summer.
