Unseasonably warm weather Saturday and Sunday gave way to a major snowstorm that dumped about 8 inches of snow on Alexandria Monday, giving students an extra day at home and casting quiet over the region. The snowstorm was the region’s biggest in more than three years.
Unfortunately for many, power outages arrived with the snow. Around 2 p.m. Monday, more than 3,900 Dominion Power customers were without power in the City of Alexandria. Another 42,800 were without power in Fairfax County. By Tuesday morning, about 1,900 people were without power in Alexandria and 18,300 without power in Fairfax County.
f you have no power, please report the outage through dom.com or by calling 866-366-4357. When more people report outages, the information can help make it easier utility workers to pinpoint the problem.
The City of Alexandria is telling residents that trash and recycling collection is sliding by a few days: "Trash, recycling, yard waste and leaf collection will all slide to Wednesday, January 5. This means Monday’s trash/recycling routes will be collected on Wednesday; Tuesday routes will be collected on Thursday; Wednesday routes will be collected on Friday; and Thursday routes collected on Saturday."
Clearing Roadways and Sidewalks
From the City of Alexandria: "Snow emergency routes are plowed first, followed by secondary routes, intermediate routes, and then residential streets. The City’s SnowReport system at alexandriava.gov/SnowReport allows residents to view plowing priorities, check the status of individual streets, and submit concerns. To report roadway obstructions, contact Alex311 by calling 703.746.4311 or visiting alexandriava.gov/Alex311.
Clearing sidewalks, driveways, and entrances is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner, occupant, community association, or business. The recent storm event has been declared Level 2. As a result, responsible parties have 48 hours from the end of snowfall at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 3 to clear paths. The deadline for clearing paths and walkways is Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m."

Tuesday’s forecast calls for sunny skies, which will help with melting snow off local roadways, but temperatures may only climb into the low 30s. Clouds will return Wednesday, but temperatures may rise to 40.
