The deadline to register to vote or update your existing registration for the Feb. 10, 2026, Special Election is Feb. 3.
The Feb. 10, 2026, Special Election will include contests for State Senate District 39 and House of Delegates District 5. State Senate District 39 encompasses the whole City of Alexandria, while House of Delegates District 5 only includes a part of the city.
CHECKING REGISTRATION
If you have moved since the last time you voted, please make sure you are registered at your current address. Check your registration at vote.elections.virginia.gov, by email at voters@alexandriava.gov, or by calling 703.746.4050.
NEW REGISTRATIONS AND ADDRESS UPDATES
If you are a U.S. citizen living in Virginia and will be 18 or older by November 3, 2026, you can register to vote by any of the following methods:
- Submit the application online at vote.elections.virginia.gov before midnight, Feb. 3, 2026.
- Register in person at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections (132 N. Royal St., Suite 100) by 5 p.m. on Feb. 3, 2026.
- Download an application at alexandriava.gov/Elections. Print, sign, and mail the completed form to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections, 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA 22314. Applications must be postmarked on or before Feb. 3, 2026.
Voter information letters for new or transferred registrants will be mailed within one week of the registration date.
After the registration deadline, the same day registration period begins. Individuals who choose to register to vote through same day registration must do so in person. Same day registration will be available at the early voting location or on Election Day at the voting location assigned to their current residential address. Please be aware that individuals who register same-day must cast a provisional ballot.
VOTING BY MAIL
Applications to request a by-mail ballot must be received in the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026. Access an application in one of the following ways:
- Visit vote.elections.virginia.gov to submit an application online.
- Downloading the application available on the City’s Elections webpage (which can be submitted by mail or email.)
- Call Voter Registration & Elections at 703.746.4050 to request that an application is mailed to you. Please consider mail delivery time when you call.
Completed ballots must be either returned to the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, or postmarked by Feb. 10, 2026, and received in the office by noon on Friday, Feb. 13, 2026. To vote in person, an application is not required. Applications should not be submitted before voting in person.
IN-PERSON EARLY VOTING
All registered voters in Virginia are eligible to vote early in-person or by mail. In-person early voting for this election begins on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, through 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections, 132 N Royal Street, Suite 100.

BALLOT DROP BOXES
Ballot drop boxes will be available at all polling places on Feb. 10, 2026, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. A secure outdoor drop box, under video surveillance, is available in front of the Office of Voter Registration and Elections 24 hours a day through February 10, 2026, at 7 p.m. A by-mail ballot may be returned at a drop box or by mail.
