Volunteer Alexandria (VolALX) will be hosting its third Food4ALX collection drive, presented by Skanska from July 1st to July 31st with a goal of collecting 40,000 pounds of canned food items and addressing the increased need for food assistance in the City of Alexandria. All collected items will be donated to Hunger Free Alexandria’s food pantries and ALIVE! to directly benefit members of our community.
"Hunger Free Alexandria is grateful that the food pantries in the city will benefit from the Food4ALX food drive. Our food providers depend upon the generosity of the Alexandria community to help those who are hungry," said Bryan Perry, food coordinator.
Marion Brunken, executive director of Volunteer Alexandria, noted “Hunger does not take a summer break, and we thank everyone who already signed up to support this month-long food drive. And we need more help to reach our goal of collecting 40,000 to help families. We increased our goal because we expect to see an increase in needs, and it is vital that our pantries and food bank are stocked without paying out of their own pocket. Every can helps!”
“Your generous donation will directly support the Grace Church Food Pantry's ongoing mission, which for over 30 years has provided vital assistance to community members facing food and financial insecurity. Especially in these uncertain times, your gift ensures that we can continue serving over 150 families a week, bringing hope and sustenance to those in need," says Jennifer Pease from the church.
VolALX is asking residents, businesses, social groups, and faith organizations, to participate and help replenish our food pantries. “There are many ways to be part of this initiative, and we ask people to let us know ASAP how they like to participate by visiting volunteeralexandria.org/food, “ says Marion Brunken. “Set up a box, go online and have items shipped to ALIVE’s warehouse, or drop off a can at one of the collection sites, donate money to help us implement this very important drive, and/or volunteer.”
This food drive is sponsored by Skanska, Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, Inc.; and Fitness Together.
"Skanska (Skanska USA Civil) is one of the Mid-Atlantic's premier heavy civil contractors and has been serving the Mid-Atlantic region for over 90 years. Skanska and their partners are currently working with the City of Alexandria on advancing the Waterfront Implementation Project which looks to mitigate flooding at the Waterfront, and we are excited to give back to the community through the food drive with volunteer hours and monetary donation, “said Jayme Gorham, project controls coordinator, Skanska.
