McLean-based Sunrise Senior Living has purchased the building that formerly housed the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents in Old Town Alexandria, according to Newmark Knight Frank, which facilitated the sale.
Sunrise has submitted a concept plan to the City to build a 93-room assisted living facility at the location. The Board of Architectural Review gave their blessing to the project in their meeting May 16 to demolish the current building and to move ahead on construction of the new Sunrise project. Rust Orling Architecture is working with Sunrise on the design.
Sunrise announced on its website that they are "working to bring Alexandria, VA high-quality assisted living and memory care services through a new community between N. Washington and N. Columbus Streets in Old Town . This community will provide a supportive environment in a convenient location for surrounding families who want to be near their aging loved ones."
The transaction for the sale of the building was actually for several parcels: 400, 414 and 418 N. Washington Street as well as 413 and 417 N. Columbus St. The four-story building at 400 N. Washington St., built in 1960, had been advertised for sale featuring 18,842 square feet of space.
"For more than 40 years, North Washington Street has been PIA's home and our place in the community. As representatives of the nation's independent, professional insurance agents, our core values include helping people and being a good neighbor," said PIA's Executive Vice President & CEO Mike Becker. "As we move just a few blocks away, we look forward to remaining a contributing member to our Alexandria community."
The new address for the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) is 415 and 419 N. Lee St. Founded in 1931, PIA is a national trade association that represents member insurance agents and their employees who sell and service all kinds of insurance, but specialize in coverage of automobiles, homes and businesses.
