Scooters now have parking spaces in Alexandria.
City employees installed corrals for dockless mobility (mostly scooters) in 13 places around Alexandria and more are planned.
The corrals are painted spaces on streets near existing parking spaces. The new spaces did not take away any parking for cars.
The corrals are part of the City’s response to resident concerns about dockless scooters and their usage. The City of Alexandria launched a pilot program early this year to test out scooters in Alexandria without allowing them permanently.
Earlier this month, City officials announced they are extending the pilot program through the end of this calendar year.
In response to a Facebook comment from a resident, Transportation & Environmental Services officials wrote, “These corrals were described in a mid-pilot memo provided to City Council. The memo talked about mid-pilot 'adjustments and actions' the City planned to take in response to concerns the City was hearing, which included requests that the City take actions such as corrals during the pilot. The memo is available at alexandriava.gov/DocklessMobility.”
TES officials are still taking feedback on the program, as well.
Earlier this month, the City took actions to prevent rides from starting or ending in certain areas of the City, including Market Square outside of City Hall and Waterfront Park.
