Residents will need to slow down in four Alexandria City school zones — or risk getting a speeding ticket.
Alexandria's school zone photo speed camera program starts with a warning program next week. Each school zone is has a 15 MPH speed limit when school signs are flashing, which is when the speed cameras will be active. Clear signs are in place to inform drivers they are entering a speed camera zone.
The zones are outside Hammond Middle School, George Washington Middle School, and Ferdinand T. Day and John Adams Elementary Schools.
Other school zones are also limited to 15 mph during drop off and pickup times, but there are no cameras in those areas.
The City conducted a two-week warning period in June to test the cameras and increase awareness, and more than 3,500 warnings were issued in those two weeks.
To get residents used to the program again, a warning period will be in place from Monday, Aug. 21 for four weeks.
The program will go fully live on September 18.
The speed cameras automatically record speed limit violations using radar. A speeding citation will be mailed and the maximum fine is $100.
In addition, local officials are reminding drivers to slow down, stop for stopped school buses and be cautious around all crosswalks as children return to schools Monday.
Fairfax County's school zone photo camera program will also relaunch next week. Key Middle School and South County Middle School are included in that program.
