The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) began the first of three weekends of construction Friday, May 1, on two replacement bridge spans across King Street and Commonwealth Avenue.
During the upcoming construction period, King Street will be fully closed between Russell Road and Daingerfield Road and traffic will be detoured to Duke Street. Commonwealth Avenue will remain open with a single travel lane alternating traffic directed by flaggers. Sunset Drive will remain completely open. The two following construction periods will take place:
May 15-18
- Start Friday at 7 a.m.
- Finish Monday night by 10 p.m.
- CSX to restore track by Tuesday at 5 a.m.
May 29-June 1
- Start Friday at 7 a.m.
- Finish Monday night by 10 p.m.
- CSX to restore track by Tuesday at 5 a.m.
The sidewalk connecting King Street to the station tunnel will be closed on both sides under the bridge during these times, but the sidewalk along Commonwealth Avenue will remain open. Detour signage will be posted to direct pedestrians. The stairs from the east platform to King Street will be closed starting May 15.
There will be no impact to Metro service during these work periods. Overnight noise is expected to be very limited.
