Landmark Mall just prior to demolition in May 2022.
If you grew up in Alexandria shopping at Landmark Mall, this may make you sad.
But it's also fascinating.
YouTube content creators "The Proper People," who travel the world sneaking into old or historic abandoned structures, traveled to Alexandria in early May just days before demolition began on Landmark Mall. The nearly 38-minute video, below, includes footage of Macy's, Sears, the food court, the mall's security office and more.
Stumbling over broken glass and trashed holiday decorations by flashlight, The Proper People saw evidence that the mall was used for security training (or perhaps a paintball war). The Proper People posted the video on June 30.
At the time of filming, demolition equipment was already stationed outside the mall, and every fluorescent light in the building had been removed, which is often an indicator that demo is imminent — the Environmental Protection Agency recommends this step because fluorescent lights contain mercury vapor that can be released when the bulbs are broken.
Landmark Mall's demolition started May 12 and clearing the site is expected to take several more weeks. The 51-acre site will become a mixed-use development, anchored by a new hospital and trauma center.
