The Virginia Marine Resources Commission, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Park Service have signed off on the Old Dominion Boat Club's plan to add waterfront improvements in front of its new building. Now the boat club will go before the City Planning Commission in June to get their blessing.
Plans call for new piers, a dock and a wharf, according to paperwork filed with the City.
A current L-shaped pier will be replaced with a combination of fixed piers extending eastward and a floating dock extending southward. Plans also call for a 4,320-square foot wharf to be built over shallow water for small boat mooring, as well as for the launch of crew shells and kayaks to increase recreational use of the river. The club would continue to retain its use of slips at 1 King St.
The new marina facilities and wharf would support club boating activities including international sailing regattas as well as City of Alexandria-sponsored events including boating and fishing programs for children with special needs.
Under the proposal, the boat club says it could host crew team races with a race course from the Dee Campbell Rowing Center with a finish line at the boat club. Other proposed activities include hosting events for U.S. Navy officers and crews.
The club notes that its concept for the marine facilities are almost a historically accurate recreation of 1802 wharves that previously occupied the property.
The group goes before the planning commission June 25.
