Alexandria will be getting a second Barnes & Noble bookstore, in Alexandria's West End, according to First Washington Realty, which manages the Shoppes at Foxchase in Alexandria.
The new bookstore will be located at the shopping center at 4515 Duke St. The 13,276 square foot spot is sandwiched between Cava Grill and Veterinary Emergency Group.
Barnes & Noble offers books, toys, games, magazines, gift items and more.
The new bookstore will be a welcome retail spot, after the closing of Hooray for Books! in December 2024 on King Street in Old Town Alexandria.
Barnes & Noble operates a second store in Alexandria in the Potomac Yard shopping center at 3651 Richmond Highway. The hours there are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, except Sundays when it is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Barnes & Noble traces its beginnings to 1873 and today serves more than 600 communities in all 50 states and remains the #1 book retailer in the United States.
The company has announced the opening of several new stores so far this year including one in Washington, D.C. that opened last month in the former Woodward & Lothrop store in downtown. The company plans to open more than 60 stores in the coming year. Barnes & Noble opened more than 60 new locations in 2025, and now boasts more than 700 bookstores, having been below 600 stores as recently as 2023.
Barnes & Noble is enjoying a period of tremendous growth as the strategy to hand control of each bookstore to its local booksellers has proven so successful. The bookseller is experiencing strong sales in its existing stores and has been opening many new stores after more than 15 years of declining store numbers. Since its momentous turnaround in 2020, the bookseller has opened more than 170 new bookstores across the country.
In 2024, Barnes & Noble opened more new bookstores in a single year than it had in the whole decade from 2009 to 2019.
