UPDATE: In advance of the first Alexandria mayoral debate, Mayor Allison Silberberg campaign manager Eileen Rivera and Vice Mayor Justin Wilson campaign manager Nate Salzman participates in a coin toss to determine speaking order.
The Silberberg camp won the toss, choosing to make the first opening statement.
The candidates meet for their first debate Wednesday, May 2 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Community School 2601 Commonwealth Ave. in Del Ray. The debate, sponsored by the Del Ray Business Association, will be moderated by Julie Carey, Virginia Bureau chief for NBC-TV, Channel 4. The event is open to all.
"We look forward to a robust, wide-ranging discussion of the issues affecting those who live, work, or own small businesses in Del Ray," said Sue Kovalsky, Del Ray Business Association president. "There are few Alexandria residents who know the challenges facing our city and region better than Julie Carey. We're thrilled that she will lead this important debate."
The primary takes place June 12.
Carey has covered Northern Virginia since joining the station in 1992. She has covered the governor, the General Assembly, and every statewide election since 1993 and frequently moderates debates for local elections across the region.

Second debate set for May 14
A second debate between the candidates is set for Monday, May 14 from 6-7 p.m. at TC Williams High School Auditorium at 3330 King St. This event is free and open to the public. No registration is necessary. The debate is sponsored by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and will be moderated by Dave Millard, chair of the Chamber Government Relations Committee Millard.
